Oh, dear. Oh, my. Mr. Darcy's Heineken commercial is a bit dependent on, er, hunting.
Heineken Darcy
A crazy commercial video, but only one minute long - and fun! Would you be tempted to purchase this ale after this commercial? (We hope you can access it.)
Writing about the Sense and Sensibility's Bicentennary, I came across a discrepancy in the first edition publication's date. Reading Jane Austen: Facts and Problems, by R. W. Chapman I found the following date in the Chronology Index:
1811 Nov. Sense and Sensibility: A Novel. In three volumes. By a Lady. T. Egerton.
In the edition (2006) of Sense and Sensibility by Cambridge , with Janet Todd's presentation, she mentions Deirdre Le Faye's chronology, with the month of October. The precise day is October 30:
1811 February JA starts planning Mansfield Park. 30 October S&S published. ? Winter JA starts revising ‘First Impressions’ into Pride and Prejudice.
Perhaps there is a study on these dates, but I could not find it. And that is why I am asking your help. Thank you all!
Can you write like Jane Austen? Or emulate her? Why not try? Your efforts might result in a text so terrible that it is funny!
This is the idea behind the contest launched by Patrice Hannon, Carrie Bebris and Gregory Bergman in Bad Austen . The best of the worst texts will be compiled and published in the Fall 2011 by Adams Media .
You can read the texts already available and vote which is the best. Oops... I mean, the "worst"! Click on this link to vote.
Gentle Readers: This clip comes from Season 2, Episode 13 "Write Where It Hurts" of MTV's Daria.
Some fun lines from the clip:
First: Quinn and Daria talk Daria: Mr. Lane's temperament, outlook, indeed his very manners are such as to arouse bemusement rather than endearment in the object of his attention. Quinn: Huh? Daria: He's flaky.
Second: The talk continues Daria: Dear sister, I would hope that whoever does become Lady Lane does so out of regard for Mr. Lane, and not for his estate. Quinn: What about his car? Daria: Hmm.
Daria and Quinn
Third: Men approach on horseback
Quinn: And pray, upon this dewy morning, what errand is it that finds you guys abroad?
Quinn's Admirer 1: Miss Quinn, may I get you a bracing spot of tea? Quinn's Admirer 2: Do you need a powder, to cure the vapors? Quinn's Admirer 3: I'll tune your pianoforte!
Daria: Oh, Quinn, your suitors are so numerous because you are so fair and good! Quinn: Oh, sister! Your wit and judgment ensure that you will not only marry well but wisely.
Do you think that the table where Jane used to write, in Chawton Cottage, was too small? Then you must see this lovely set made by Grace White.
Jane Austen's writing table in miniature. Image @Grace White
When I asked for permission to publish this image she told me that she custom made the table. (She works primarily in 1:12 scale (1 inch = 1 foot), and occasionally other miniature scales.) Grace, who is from Greensboro, N.C., talks about her miniatures on her blog, Nid D'abeille.
I was commissioned to make replicas of the Chawton Cottage table and chair where Jane Austen did much of her writing. It was a very enjoyable endeavor! I hope the owner will be pleased when she receives them. I think I can say they're some of the finest things I've made.
The front legs of the chair and the turned pedestal of the table were adapted from existing miniature turned pieces, but everything else I made from scratch.
Grace's miniatures are for sale in her Etsy shop, The Honeybee.
A gift for a friend: Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet. Image @Grace White
I have wrote a post for Jane Austen's Portuguese readers asking what Christmas gift they would give, if possible, to Jane. There were many responses: from paper to laptops, from books to flowers, from washing machines to time machines, from a real Mr. Darcy to Mr. Lefroy, from paying all her books' royalties to simply saying that she is a successful writer today.
If you could give her a gift, what would it be? Please leave your comment. In the end, all we want to say is: thank you, dear Jane!
Whenever I see older movies with children I wonder if they continued their career as an actor, and if they are very different from that time, etc.
I know that not everyone appreciates the 1987 Northanger Abbey film version of Jane Austen's novel, but I find it amusing and I loved the boy who played Catherine's brother. They called him Edward, which is wrong, but never mind. I remember him smiling, looking a bit like a rodent, and yelling: "Cathy, Cathy!"
Well, I found the boy, I mean, the actor - Oliver Hembrough.
When I read the news about Prince William engagement to Miss Catherine Elizabeth Middleton, one question occurred to me: would Miss Middleton be a distant relative of Sir John Middleton from Devonshire? Owner of Barton Cottage and dear cousin of Mrs. Dashwood?
I love my Jane Austen books, so to keep buying more and more books about Jane I have made those little journals. I think they are a good gift to a friend Janeite! Click to see them on Etsy.

Inquiring readers, Raquel Sallaberry from Jane Austen em Português has alerted us to the wonderful news:
Harper Collins is pleased to announce it has commissioned The Real Jane Austen [Jane Austen True], a major new biography by Paula Byrne, for publication in 2013. This will be the first substantial biography of Jane Austen's century, and contain a wealth of new research by the author of the bestseller, Mad World and Perdita. The first book by Paula Byrne, a study of Jane Austen and the Theatre was described by Paul Johnson in The Spectator as "the best book on Jane Austen I've read." Paula will offer a glimpse of its innovative approach in a lecture at the Bath Literature Festival on March 5, 2011 (Saturday).
Paula Byrne is the author of Jane Austen and the Theatre, 2007, which was shortlisted for the Theatre Book Prize.
I've made a post about Children's Day and I metioned Margarteth Dashwood (Emilie François) as an example of child. To illustrate the post I used a still from Sense and Sensibility, 1995.
Later I decided to conduct some research and realized the actress had starred in only two films, besides Sense and Sensibility: Paws and New Year's Day.
Mark Brownlow, from Email Marketing, imagined the inbox's emails from some famous characters. The Elizabeth Bennet's inbox is priceless!
Thanking to the people who had commented on his post, Mark said he thought that the jokes would have been modernized to the movies and was surprised to notice how modern they were in the book itself.
Can our beautiful Marianne Dashwood (Kate Winslet in Sense and Sensibility 1996) find true love the third time around? She had married young (to Jim Threapleton), then found her Colonel Brandon (Sam Mendez), and now is dating a man who could be the epitome of Willoughby (male model Louis Dowler). If radiant looks are anything to go by, Kate has found her MAN. Click on this article to read the rest of the story ....

"I do love in Sense and Sensibility
This is one of my favourite scenes from Sense and Sensibility 1995: Edward delicacy of the sentiments and the coldness of his sister, Fanny."
My humble homage to Elizabeth Gaskell; a photo from my little Cranford.
