Jennifer Ehle: I Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You, Colin Firth

When I espied that photo of Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth, I could not stop myself from singing "I can't take my eyes off of youuuu!"

Jane Austen Film Actor Throwdown: The King's Speech

Colin Firth, whose fame began with his role as Mr. Darcy, has won accolades for his portrayal of King George VI, and rightly so. This week's question is simple: Have you seen the King's Speech?

The King's Speech
I have seen it once
I have seen it twice
I have seen it more than twice
I intend to see it
I haven't seen it and I won't

As reported previously, Queen Elizabeth II enjoyed the film. Here is the press release from The Weinstein Company:
New York, NY, February 4, 2011 - The Weinstein Company (TWC) is honored to learn that Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth, has enjoyed a private screening of THE KING'S SPEECH, as reported by Duncan Larcombe, Royal Editor, in today's edition of The Sun. The film, directed by Tom Hooper and written by David Seidler, tells the story of Her Majesty's father, King George VI, as he struggles to overcome a crippling speech impediment while grappling with his sudden, unexpected ascension to throne and the mounting danger of Nazi Germany. THE KING'S SPEECH stars Colin Firth as King George VI, Geoffrey Rush as the King's speech therapist, Lionel Logue, and Helena Bonham Carter as Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.
King George VI and Queen Elizabeth
THE KING'S SPEECH has been seen and admired by many notable public figures, including British Prime Minister David Cameron, who hosted a private screening at his home over the Christmas holidays; Prince Andrew; Lord and Lady William Astor; Lord Edward Spencer-Churchill; and Edwina Sandys, the granddaughter of Winston Churchill (portrayed in the film by Timothy Spall).
Screenwriter David Seidler said, "To learn Her Majesty has seen the film, and was moved, in turn moves and humbles me greatly. When, thirty years ago, the Queen Mother asked me to wait and not tell this story during her lifetime, because the memory of these events was still too painful, I realized the depths of the emotions involved. Now this story has been written and filmed with a great deal of love, admiration, and respect for Her Majesty's father. That Her Majesty has responded favorably to this, is wonderfully gratifying."
Said Harvey Weinstein, TWC co-Chairman and executive producer of THE KING'S SPEECH, "On behalf of the director Tom Hooper; the producers, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Gareth Unwin; Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, Helena Bonham Carter and our entire ensemble cast: we are deeply honored and humbled by Her Majesty's appreciation of the film. It was a labor of love for all of us and this is high praise, indeed."

Colin Firth will be featured Inside the Actor's Studio, Monday, February 7th at 7 PM EST.

Mr. Darcy Wins a Golden Globe

Colin Firth looking sartorially resplendent at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards
His Royal Firthness won a much-earned Golden Globe for his spectacular performance in The King's Speech. If you are a fan of good films and great acting, this movie is a must-see. I actually paid twice (unheard of, really) to see Colin Firth in one of the best roles in his life (it is hard to choose between this role and A Single Man.)
Colin's tribute to his wife Livia was touching
The evening was tarnished for me almost at the start, however, since Geoffrey Rush did not win for his role as Lionel Logue. Giving the Golden Globe to Colin Firth only was like giving one bookend as a gift. You need two bookends, everyone knows that, and The King's Speech REQUIRED Geoffrey Rush's remarkable portayal of the speech therapist for the story to work. Geoffrey'r role was ESSENTIAL. His performance equalled Colin's - they were like bookends - each needing each other, and bouncing off each other for the story to make sense.

Geoffrey Rush as Lionel Logue
So how could the Golden Globes have passed Geoffrey over? I am all puzzlement.

Below, Colin speaks about seeing Jennifer Ehle, his costar in Pride and Prejudice at about 3:17 in the video clip below (which is rather boring, actually, except for his comment about her and about Geoffrey Rush afterwards).

A Husband's Funny Take on Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy

I adore Scott Herhold, although I have never met him. But a man with a sense of humor and fifteen years of  patient tolerance towards his wife's crush on Colin Firth must be adored and cherished. According to Scott:
"My wife can cue to exactly the point on our DVD where Mr. Darcy, beset by his love for Elizabeth, dunks himself at Pemberley.
The repetition of this scene has injected continuing life into the Colin Firth iconography in my household."
Scott even knows which sequels and prequels are in his wife's library:
"We've got the whole oeuvre of Darcy books: "The Second Mrs. Darcy" and the "Darcy Connection," both by Elizabeth Aston, and "Mr. Darcy's Diary," by Amanda Grange."
And he recalls with evident humor the time she went to the Santa Barbara Film Festival expressly to see Colin:
On the red carpet
In our case, Colin-mania has gone further yet. My wife, her sister and a friend went to the Santa Barbara Film Festival last spring to meet the British god himself.
Prevailing on her contacts at a party rental service that was contributing to the reception, my wife wheedled an invitation to a private meet-and-greet with Firth.
And yes, he was everything he was advertised to be -- tall, thin, handsome, impossibly charming and willing to pose for pictures.
Click on Colin, go jump in the lake. Wait, don't! to read Scott's charming, tongue in cheek homage to his wife's continuing crush on Colin Firth.

Way Back When: Colin Firth

Colin Firth is so swoonworthy he was recently voted Britain's sexiest man. But would he have earned the title way back when? You decide.

Jane Austen Movie Throwdown - At the Oscars

I hate to, well, brag, but during last night's live Twitter chat during the Oscar Award Show, yours truly picked the 6 top winners. Which meant, of course, that I though Colin Firth and Carey Mulligan would not win. This week, I extend the JA Movie Throwdown by asking you to vote on their Red Carpet Appearance. Carey has the advantage in that she was photographed many times, and I could find only one BBC video of poor Colin, whose deliciousness seems not to be appreciated by the American press. It is nice to see him smile and a dimple appear in his cheek. (Update - I found a dashing image) I could not find Emily Blunt, nor do I recall her making an appearance, but Ive included Kate Winslet, who has become a fixture at these events.

Jane Austen Movie Throwdown

This week we will ask a two-part question. One today and one tomorrow.

Which of the two BAFTA winners stands the best chance of winning an Oscar tonight? Colin Firth or Carey Mulligan?

Ten Things About Colin Firth

Mirror.com.UK featured an article: Colin Firth: 10 Things You Need to Know About the Oscar Nominated Actor.

Among the tidbits: In a 2006 interview Firth reveled that the three women in his life were “my mother, my wife and Jane Austen.”

He also was mentioned as the Sexiest Man Alive in People Magazine in 2007.

Firth and Mulligan awarded BAFTAs

The British Academy Film Awards were presented last night at the Royal Opera House in London and for those in the US who did not catch it on BBC America, I will reveal that two Austen actors, Colin Firth (Pride and Prejudice 95) and Carey Mulligan (Northanger Abbey 07), won the lead actor awards for A Single Man and An Education respectively. This is a good indication that they will be front runners to The Academy Awards to be presented Sunday, March 7th, 2010 at the Kodac Theatre in Hollywood. Best of luck Colin and Carey. Here are their acceptance speeches. Wish I knew how to repair refrigerators. I'd gladly volunteer to fix Colin's without hesitation.

OH, and the Guardian asks, "Could Colin Firth be the Great British Actor of our time?" Could? Nuff said!

Colin Firth & Carey Mulligan Garner Academy Award Noms Today!

It came to pass just as predicted. British actors Colin Firth and Carrey Mulligan, who were both strong contenders in the Actor & Actress in a Leading Role categories were nominated this morning for Academy Awards. Another month of hard campaigning and we just might see one of them take that little golden man back to England with them.

You can discover who their competition is and all of the other nominees at The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences website. I am also rooting for An Education in the best picture and screenplay categories. All the winners will be announced on March 7th, 2010.

If you still need more Colin Firth excitement for the day – then check out this great BBC Radio 4 program Front Row that features an interview of His Firthness. Big thanks to Julie at Austenonly for the heads up.

Colin Firth: Interviewed on CBS

Here's an interview with Colin Firth on CBS's site: The Leading Man Actor Who Became Perfect Jane Austen Hero Now Generating Oscar Buzz With His Performance in "A Single Man." In part the interview says:

But he isn't the kind of guy to look too deeply into the mouth of awards (of which he's had a few) or to try to analyze his own success.

"No, I don't know what it is, certainly even less in myself, I do not know why I've been invited in," he said. "I do not know why it's worked when it's worked, and it hasn't when it hasn't. I've got some theories."
One of his theories is what he calls his "neutral" looks, a face onto which characters can be painted. "Goldilocks looks" - not too hot not too cold, a guy who's been called the thinking woman's heartthrob.

Colin met his wife Livia in a London eco-fashion shop. Livia is still heavily into eco-fashion, and is completely against disposable fashion. In her blog she discusses celebrating the classics instead of following trends. At the Golden Globe Awards she wore a vintage wedding dress (below). At the SAG awards, Livia wore a dress by ethical designer Mr Larkin (above).

Jane Austen Actors Shine at Golden Globes

While the Brits came up empty-handed at the Golden Globes, they sparkled as nicely in their dress up clothes. Last year's winner for Happy Go Lucky, Sally Hawkins (Anne Elliot, 2007), looked fit and sassy in her short gown.

Colin Firth (Mr. Darcy, 1995) and wife Livia managed to keep dry on the red carpet. He was nominated for A Single Man.

Caret Mulligan (Kitty Bennet, 2005 & Isabella Thorpe, 2007) brought her mom, and sported a cute hair band. Sadly, she did not win for An Education.

Kate Winslet (Marianne Dashwood, 1996) looked regal and spectacular in an Yves St. Laurent gown. She presented a Golden Globe to Jeff Bridges for Best Actor in Crazy Heart.

And although Emily Blunt (nominated for Young Victoria) has not yet portrayed a Jane Austen character in a film, she is removed by only one degree of separation, having performed opposite Anne Hathaway (Becoming Jane) in The Devil Wears Prada and as Prudie in the Jane Austen Book Club

Addition:
Mention must be made of Janet McTeer, Mrs. Dashwood, 2007, (Thanks Deborah) for HBO's Into the Storm. Unfortunately, I could find no image of her at the Award Ceremony.

Jane Austen Adaptation Actors in the News

Colin Firth (Mr Darcy 1995) as George VI and Helena Bonham-Carter as Elizabeth, the Queen Mother in The King's Speech, Colin's latest movie which he is currently filming. No images of Jennifer Ehle yet, but we'll post them as soon as they are available.

Why is Carey Mulligan (Kitty Bennet, 2005) the new "It" girl British import in Hollywood? This Daily Mail article spells it out: She's fresh and she's hot,' said Peter Rice, the head of Fox Searchlight. a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences opined,'There's a certain type of British actress we embrace - like Kate Winslet, Emily Blunt or Keira Knightley. Carey's the new girl and people are falling in love with her.'

Gemma Arterton (Elizabeth Bennet, Lost in Austen) makes her London theatre debut in The Little Dog Laughed, a satire on the hypocrisy of Hollywood. Gemma should know something about the topic, having appeared as a Bond girl in Quantum Of Solace. She will also be seen in Clash of the Titans and Prince of Persia, both coming out this year.
Last but not least. What does the incomparable Anna Massey have in common with Helen Jerome's classic play interpretation of Pride and Prejudice, Celia Johnson, and Raymond Massey?

Find out in this article from Jane Austen's World.

Anna, who played Mrs. Norris in 1983's Mansfield Park, revealed a wit as acerbic as Jane Austen's in her autobiography,Telling Some Tales. She describes one New York Theatre gathering with this delicious observation: "The room was full of egos, many of whom wrote their own notices as they shook your hand."
